Back in the early 2000s while living in L.A., I recall strolling past shop windows filled with impossibly high platform heels in an assortment of colors and adornments... studs, buckles, sparkles, grommets and bows. I would laugh, knowing that there were only a couple places these shoes were actually worn, in the bedroom (many with cameras) or on a stage with a pole. Surely no one would wear heels of this height outside of these places. Oh how I was wrong!
Despite the inability to walk in them, and their association with risqué activities, 4", 5" and even 6" platform heels have taken hold as one of the biggest trends in recent years. Why? Some speculate their popularity coincides with the downturn of the economy. I guess the prostitute look is pretty attractive when we are broke. At least they're still making money. Some attribute their growth to their leg "lengthening" and heightening effect. After all who doesn't want to look long and lean like a model?
IMFO, these shoes should stay on the feet of strippers and porn stars, and only ever adorn your own feet in private during your bedroom adventures. Any heel over 3.5" in height difference from pad to heel is NOT made for walking...no matter whether they are Louboutins or Payless. I've fallen victim to this trend myself. Unable to find normal heels for an event I regretfully settled for some 5" platform heels, only to rip them off after barely walking around for 30 minutes. When I see women out in these heels I become embarrassed for them. They can barely stand upright, and every step is painful to watch. Face plants are inevitable. You are far from looking like a model in these impossible heels. I've seen more graceful prostitutes!
So pass the ultra high heels up ladies! Stick with the sexy heel you can actually strut in! A 3.5" heel-pad difference is about the highest any classy woman that appreciates being able to walk should wear. You'll be amazed at your new found confidence and in turn, sexiness! You'll surely sail through your night out without eating pavement and actually look good in your heels outside of Instagram!
